Runes were developed and used by the Germanic peoples. The oldest known runes are the 24 Elder Futhark runes, dating back to the 1st century CE. Although their exact origin remains a mystery, some believe they might be based on the ancient Italian writing style called Old Italic. The word “rune” itself comes from the Proto-German word runo or Old Norse run, meaning “a secret, magic sign, runic character.”
Three Aetts of the Elder Futhark
The 24 Elder Futhark runes are grouped into three sets, known as ætts:
Freyr and Freyja’s Aett:
These first eight runes represent physical aspects of the world, including creation, war, prosperity, virility, and love.
Runes in this ætt include Fehu, Uruz, Thurisaz, Ansuz, Raidho, Kenaz, Gebo, and Wunjo1.
Heimdall and Mordgud’s Aett:
The second set of eight runes is associated with change, the underworld, and the unconscious mind.
These runes symbolize beginnings, endings, chaos, destruction, and the seasons.
Runes in this ætt include Hagalaz, Nauthiz, Isa, Jera, Eihwaz, Pertho, Algiz, and Sowelo1.
Tyr and Ziza’s Aett:
The third set of eight runes connects to spirituality, emotions, and our interaction with the world.
Runes in this ætt are ruled by Tyr and Ziza1.
